Gia Jewelry Line
People have asked how I started designing jewelry. Like many things in my life that I have stumbled upon…it involves children. Over ten years ago, my middle son gave me a gift of a uniquely designed necklace. Like any Mom would do, I wore it out. The fastener separated from the necklace as I wore it so much. I kept saying, “I am going to get that necklace restrung.” I am embarrassed to admit how many times I said that to myself. Then, one day, arrangements were made for my grandchildren to visit. These visits create great excitement in me and, given my thought process…I always think of options that remove cell phones and iPads from the equation, replacing them with music, dancing, paintbrushes, or outdoor activities. On this particular day, I purchased alphabet beads to entice the little ones to spell their names and create a piece of jewelry.
I decided that while they would be responsible for stringing theirs, I would restring mine. I thought that simplicity was vital and that I would eliminate troublesome fasteners. I wanted to put the necklace over my head, onto my neck, or around my wrist, easy-peasy. I wanted to create one-of-a-kind pieces that would not be duplicated, using different shapes and colors that would be energetic and beautiful. As a result, I landed on using magnetic fasteners for ease of use. Magnetic fasteners are not for those under 14 or those with heart conditions. I will design it individually without the magnet fasteners for those interested.
The history of beading is as vast as varied. It is said that beading dates back 5,000 years. So why not continue the tradition? There is something about using glass or stone and color that re-energizes the soul—simple, fun-loving combinations and conversation starters—pieces that bring joy to the people wearing them. Bringing joy is a favored pastime.
